Wrestling: Sierra Leone to make debut in Junior Championship

Wrestlers ready to fly the national colours in Finland

President of Sierra Leone Wrestling Association (SLWA), Prince Vandy Sualley, has confirmed that the country was highly in preparation to make its debut at the 2017 World Junior Wrestling Championship.

The tournament, which is billed for Tampere, Finland, would run from August 1-6 and Sierra Leone would have three wrestlers that would battle for medals.

According to Sualley, already, the wrestlers were under intensive daily training session at their wrestling training camp while the administration was still scouting for funds to enable the proposed 7-man delegation to make the trip.

Confirming his team, the SLWA boss said the African Championship silver medalists, Fatmata Mansaray and Mathew Moiwoi Farmah, who grabbed bronze in 66 kg Greco-Roman Juniors also in the African championship are part of the team.

He said: “I have no doubt in these fighters. They made their debut at the African Championship in April this year and returned home with medals.So, I am also looking forward to see them returning home with World championship title also.”

The SLWA boss, who is also the Treasurer of the National Olympic Committee of Sierra Leone (NOC-SLE), and still seeking for funds, was  hopeful that with maximum support coupled with the required resource, the crop of fighters would  give the country its first world championship honors.
